Position Summary
Research Assistant (audio/video recording and provincial fieldwork) with the Principal Investigator on an Insight Development Grant project Funded by SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada). This research project entails documenting communities of gong players across Canadian provinces. We broach the ethnographic question: ‘What is going on’ in the sound-art and ‘sound healing’ communities? And, are guided by the question: How might improvisational sonic events (gong baths, sound immersions, or sound meditations) gesture toward individual and community wellbeing in local Canadian communities? Project Title: Toward a Sound Pedagogy: A Sonic and Performative Ethnography of ‘Sound Healers’ in Canada.
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator of the research, your duties include:
1) Participate in zoom meetings with the Principal Investigator (approx. twice per month or as needed as the project unfolds)
2) Provide weekly updates on the progress of the work and track hours worked on a reporting spreadsheet
3) Upload audio/visual data to secure storage
4) Access to computer and reliable internet is required
5) MUST have a flexible schedule; able to travel to Canadian provinces for gathering audio/visual data (spring/summer 2023); dates to be determined
6) May accompany Principal Investigator to conference or event in 2024 to disseminate the research
Position Requirements
· Graduate or qualified undergraduate student in MAP, Education, or Anthropology (other faculties considered if you have strong audio/visual experiences and skills)
· Proficient skills in audio/visual recording and editing (demonstrated in your Resume/CV)
· Flexibility, organization, and time management skills
· Interpersonal skills, mindful communicator, appropriate email and in person etiquette with research participants
· Attention to detail
· Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision and work well in a collaboration
· Asset: you are interested in or curious about: sound studies, critical studies in improvisation, multiliteracies, wellness, gong players, collaborative ethnography, documentaries
