The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance (MAP) at the University of Regina invites applications for a tenure-track Instructor position in Technical Theatre and Stage Management in the Theatre Department at The University of Regina.

The Theatre Department launched its new BFA in Devised Performance and Theatre Creation and BA in Theatre Studies and Dramatic Arts in September 2022. In order to grow this vibrant new BFA program, we are seeking a candidate who has a background in devised theatre and expertise in technical theatre and stage management, with primary experience in technical direction, production management, operating a variety of lighting and sound systems, hanging/focussing lights, CAD, and use of multiple projectors. We are also seeking a candidate who has skills in two or more of the following areas: lighting, sound or projection design, sustainable design practices, scenography, music composition, new media, digital performance, site-specific performance, immersive theatre, or arts administration.

This new program has enabled us to critically rethink and reimagine theatre training today, and we welcome artist-practitioners with new, pluralistic, culturally conscious, and rigorous theatre methodologies in training the theatre artists of tomorrow. We seek a candidate that will demonstrate expertise in and have a dynamic and engaged record of theatre/performance-creation, possess an MFA, and/or have equivalent professional experience or training.

The ideal candidate will preferably have experience teaching at the post-secondary level, and be able to demonstrate substantial engagement with non-traditional theatre creation with the ability to teach across a varied curriculum in their field. We are also seeking candidates who will be comfortable and willing to teach and supervise MA and MFA students. We are looking for a collaborative, flexible colleague who has the ability to positively engage with our local communities and an often-diverse student body that is able to work in partnership to produce highly creative large and small-scale student productions. We are looking for a candidate with anti-racist and decolonial ideologies who is committed to sustainable practices and teaching. The Theatre Department in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance is proud to be a part of that renewal. These include the 439-seat University Theatre and the adjacent, versatile Shumiatcher Open Stage, also known as the Shu-Box Theatre. The Theatre Department is an engaged member of our community. We take pride in our ongoing relationships with the Globe Theatre and in past collaborations, such as the Making Treaty 4 project, and with local independent companies Listen to Dis’, Curtain Razors, and the Saskatchewan Association of Theatre Professionals. We are currently working in partnership with Regina’s On Cue Performance Hub in creating space for new, alternative theatre-makers in our city to produce new works, and was a senior partner in presenting the first RISER REGINA project in the spring of 2023 in partnership with On Cue.

Candidates should possess an MFA or the equivalent in professional skills and/or training. Preference will be given to those with a record of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level. This position will begin January 1, 2024. A later start date could be negotiated with the right candidate.
