Position Summary
We’re seeking a creative, talented, passionate, relationship builder to join our team as a Marketing and Publicity Manager. The MPM role is a key component in the success of UR Press, from author and media relations, to creating campaigns that bring awareness to our books and authors.

The MPM position will be responsible for bringing marketing and publicity expertise to all facets of the organization including; assessing potential marketing viability of manuscripts, positioning of manuscripts, creating and executing marketing and publicity campaigns, ensuring an up-to-date media contact database, and developing readership. The candidate will coordinate with our Production Team helping them to create books to attract its intended audiences. The MPM will also works closely with the Sales and Distribution Manager to write jacket and catalogue promotional copy, as well as pitch new titles to the Press’s external sales forces; providing advice on how a book is being pitched to media and developing early media interest (such as interviews and written reviews), in addition to executing key plans for author attendance at festivals, conferences, and launches.

What You’ll Do:
  • Envision and execute strategic marketing and publicity campaigns, including advertising and social media activities for URPress.
  • Follow-up and report on any success metrics to these campaigns.
  • Manage relations with media, including book reviewers and journal editors, executing comprehensive publicity for each book.
  • Create promotional content for URPress such as newsletters, catalogues, handouts, etc… and write jacket copy for new titles and press releases.
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager and Art Director on the design of marketing materials and the creation of graphics and artwork for advertisements.
  • Organize and partake in book launches, conferences, and events, including preparing presentations.
  • Conduct analytics audits and provide recommendations for website improvements and other audience development.
  • Strategize for future seasons regarding deadlines, formats, titles, potential book awards and publication dates for all titles.
  • Pitch and secure coverage in regional, national, and international media, as well as festival invitations.
  • Advise on and submit book award packages.
  • Plan nationwide author events and tours at all levels.
  • Research and secure partnerships and collaboration opportunities for author events.
  • Manage and Develop URP social media platforms for potential reader engagement.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with URP team members and external service partners, such as contract designers, sales partners, external distribution publicists, as well as authors.
  • Onboard new authors for each season, guiding them through the marketing and publicity, and post-editorial processes.

Position Requirements
What You Will Bring to the Position:
  • Bachelor degree, preferably in commerce, marketing, or communication.
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience working in the publishing industry as a marketing professional or book publicist. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in this Role:
  • Excellent communication and planning skills.
  • A strong understanding of the Canadian book publishing market with a specific emphasis on non-fiction publishing.
  • A network of local and national media contacts to pitch and chase for reviews and coverage.
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities of the fast-paced publishing environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of book publishing marketing practices in Canada and globally;
  • Experience with and knowledge of of a variety of publicity and marketing practices for Trade, Academic, Library and other publishing segments is crucial;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Excellent presentation skills with the demonstrated ability to present to both large and small groups;
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Demonstrated strong computer skills are required (advanced experience in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Creative Suite and Zoom Video Conferencing);
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and organize competing demands;
  • Capable of making independent decisions and exercising mature judgment/initiative in handling work assignments;
  • Able to carry, lift, and set up small and large display units, audio-visual equipment and deliver boxes of promotional material;
  • Required travel domestically and abroad occasionally.

Salary Range $67,626 - $91,266 annually
Status Permanent
Work Hours
Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM;
Occasional irregular work hours are required in this position, including evenings and weekends.
